Small raku sculptures are a new body of work that Beate has developed since 2007. Raku is an ancient oriental firing technique, in which pieces are fired to around 1000°C and removed from the kiln still glowing. After a short cooling period, they are plunged into a bed of sawdust. The thermal shock and smoke-firing create fascinating surface effects with intentional fracturing of the glaze. The interaction of coincidence and intentional manipulation of the glowing object can never be repeated. Every piece of raku is a unique work of art.
