The “head” is a constantly recurring body of work, returning in differing forms at irregular intervals. The creative process is a constant, however.  First, Beate builds a hollow, vessel-like cranial form from soft clay. Cheeks, forehead and chin are formed from the inside of the sculpture, with the natural resistance of the material providing scope for the coincidental. From the depths of the clay emerge facial features, which in turn trigger fantasies and associative thoughts. The heads rarely resemble real people. They are portraits of an idea, of a moment in time, of a mood and thus introverted images rather than images of a physical reality.
